A
Brief History of this Noble Breed

A dog of the Bulldog type was first
mentioned in literature from around the year 1200 and by 1500 the name applied to them was spelled Bonddogge or
Bolddogge. William Harrison in his Description of England, published in
1586, wrote of them "...because manie of them are tied up in chaines and strong
bonds in the daie time for doing hurt abroad, which is an huge dog, stubborn, ouglie,
eager, burthenouse of bodie (and therefore of little swiftness), terrible and fearful to
behold, and oftentimes more fierce and fell than anie Archadian or Corsican cur." |
The
Bandog is mentioned in Act I, Scene IV of William Shakespeare's King Henry VI. Part II,
as follows: "The time when screech owls and Bandogges howl and spirits walk and
ghosts break up their graves."
In the 1800 Cynographia Britannica, by Syndenham Edwards, a very graphic description was given of the Bulldog's qualities. It reads in part as follows: |
"The Bulldog is in height about eighteen inches and weighs about thirty-six pounds, head round and full, muzzle short, ears small... chest wide, body round, with limbs very muscular and strong; the tail... rarely erected, except when the passions of the animal are aroused; the hide loose and thick, particularly about the neck; the hair short, the hind feet turned outwards, hocks rather approaching each other, which seems to obstruct their speed when running, but is admirably adapted to progressive motion when combating on their bellies; but the most striking character is the under-jaw almost uniformly projecting beyond the upper; for if the mouth is even they become shark's headed, which is considered a bad point." |

| On several occasions, I have had people e-mail me with one common question. "What is the difference between the different breeds also called bulldogs?" This has inspired me to add this section with pictures and links to answer this very question. The dogs I personally have are the British (English) Bulldogs, but here are examples of the other noble breeds, also called "Bulldogs." Just click on the pictures to be transported to the links that explain more about them. Sheila | ||
