Bulldog References for Education

Compiled by Sheila Dunn

The information on this site may take a long time to load, but with what it has to offer towards education, it is well worth it.  We appreciate your patience...

Image8.gif (2340 bytes)One of the most essential things any sincere owner, breeder or handler and trainer could possibly have, in addition to a loving passion for the breed, is knowledge and experience. Benjamin Franklin once wrote that (and I’m paraphrasing) "Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgment." Taking the time and making the effort to learn as much as you can about the bulldog, with his distinguished expression and remarkable personality, will aid with encountering the trials brought on from poor judgment. When you can learn from someone else’s mistakes and avoid making them yourself, you will be farther ahead.

This reference guide has been compiled for the purpose of sharing recommendations for informational material. By no means does this guide list everything available, however, it will provide a firm foundation and a beginning.

To begin with, I would like to recommend that you join your local Bulldog Club, as well as your division for the Bulldog Club of America. As part of your membership with the Bulldog Club of America, you will receive the Bulldogger magazine. This special magazine comes out quarterly and is full of a lot of great information. Your local Bulldog club will have monthly newsletters, also with needed information. At the meeting, you can learn about what affects the bulldog as a breed, along with local legislation that affects dog ownership.

In most areas, there are also All-Breed Clubs that may be worth joining. That will be up to you to decide. These clubs, if they are good, rather than politically oriented, can provide good information about the dog world.

Another place for information is to visit as many dog shows as you can. At ring side, you will have the opportunity to talk to breeders, handlers and other owners. You will also find helpful printed material from the American Kennel Club and local breed clubs at most all-breed dog shows. However, please be patient with some of the people you talk to at ring side. In many cases, they are waiting for their turn to go into the ring and are sometimes known to walk, or run away, in mid-sentence. They are not being rude, they just heard their number being called to enter the ring with the dog they are showing. After all, that is why they are there.

Many clubs sponsor Puppy Fun Matches. Sometimes they’re AKC sanctioned, sometime not, but always, they’re a great place to socialize; for you and your puppy.

Learning is a life long process that can be what helps those with good hearts become betterBullA.jpg (2751 bytes) people. It can also help the responsible breeder develop healthier bulldogs. The Bulldog Club of American has a Code of Ethics, to remind members to do what is right for our dogs, but in my experience, too many give these written code of ethics lip service rather than taking action.

To join or not to join?  How do the canine clubs in your area rate?

I received a post from a new Bulldogger, asking a very interesting question that I would like to share.   She asks... "Are Bulldog clubs only for people who show Bulldogs? Why should you join a club?  Please let me know. I wanted to join a club but someone told me that they are only for people who show their Bulldogs."

My answer to her (and personal opinion on this issue is as follows....
"Whoever told you that clubs are only for those of us who show, is mistaken about what a good club is all about or should be about. Maybe this is due to their unfortunate experience with a bad club, I don't know, as there are some clubs that are more interested in clicky political agendas than in dogs. Joining a club may be helpful if you are interested in showing, however, a good club goes far beyond that. A good club is also a place for solid education, fun socializing (for both people and dogs), a great means to stay updated with various anti-dog or breed specific legislation that the extremists try to impose on us in their attempt to outlaw companion dog ownership and much much more. A good club is well worth the membership"

Books

These are some of the books, magazines and videos that I have found to be helpful, as well as other important information. As I continue my studies, this reference guide will grow. If there are other references that you know about, that are equally helpful and not on this list, please let me know. I would be happy to add them. Thank you.
