vaccinate.gif (21072 bytes)"Be sure to Vaccinate!"

Vaccinate against: Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Coronavirus, Parvovirus, Bordetella, Parainfluenza and in many areas, Lyme Disease.

Common Parasites: Tapeworm, Hookworm, Whipworm, Roundworm, Heartworm, Coccidia and Giardia

Vaccinations are important to maintain health, as is an annual exam by a Bulldog competent veterinarian. Fecal exams should also be done regularly to check for internal parasites. Should parasites be present, the proper medication to eliminate them should be used. We do not recommend a general worming medication be given to any Bulldog, if no parasites are present. Remember, worming medications are poison and we see no need to give a poison to a Bulldog if there is no need. This, combined with a proper diet, lots of clean, fresh water, exercise, training and all the love you can offer, your Bulldog will be a wonderful family member.    For More details on various parasites, click here  rdball.gif (967 bytes)

Weather Tips

Every season, with its temperature changes comes with their share of alerts and cautions to help keep our bulldogs healthy, happy and safe.  Here are some tips from our team and our website visitors....  If you have any quick tips to add, please submit them to our team.  Thank you.

full-red-rose-1.gif (7594 bytes) Keep a small squeeze bottle of lemon juice handy, such as the kind made by RealLemon®. If your Bulldog becomes overheated, breathing can become unusually labored and loud, and the tongue may begin to turn bluish. Much of this is caused by a buildup of phlegm that blocks the airways. One good squirt of lemon juice to the back of the dog's mouth will clear this phlegm instantly and breathing will improve immediately. This will give you valuable time to get your dog to a cool place.

red-apple.gif (9993 bytes)In colder regions, please be sure to clean your bulldog's paws after each walk and clean them well.  The salts and chemicals often used to help maintain traction for auto tires and pedestrian's walking can be very harmful to your dog's feet.

Tips

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Got an insect bite that is driving you and/or your dog nuts with how bad it itches?  Dampen a bar of soap, rub the wet soap on the bite and let it dry.  It will stop the itching in seconds and will also help prevent infection....    Sheila...

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Need a flea deterrent?  Fleas cannot handle an environment that has a high acid pH level. Keep all your citrus peels and dehydrate them.  Grind the dried peels to a powder and use as a natural flea powder.  It smells great, works great and is safe for all ages, even the youngest of puppies...  Sheila...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Put a few moth balls in your vacuum cleaner bag to kill fleas that are vacuumed up. Only 2 or 3 are necessary! Chris...

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Anal glands need to be expressed. Not a pretty job, down right stinky, but it does need to be done occasionally, especially if your dog starts to scoot around on their bottoms. Dogs are also known (especially males) to use the fluids in these anal glands as part of their territory marking routine along with their "leg lifting" rituals...    Sheila...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)I taught my bully to ring a bell, placed on a string, hung over the door knob of the back door. Whenever I put him out I pushed his nose into the bell and said "ring the bell if gotta go potty". Now he rings it whenever he has to go potty or just wants to go outside and sit. It only took about a week for him to catch on. The bell is a life saver.   Kris...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Bully Ice Chips: Freeze beef or chicken broth (1 can broth to 2 cans water) in a couple of ice cube trays. Add garlic (a pinch only), your Bulldog will be in heaven.  Francisco...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Yellow Lawn Spots: Use one part bleach to 5 or 10 parts water, depending on how strong a setting you use.   Use an attachment on the hose that automatically mixes.  Much to my surprise and delight, my lawns are amazing and no brown spots.    Sheila...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Cleaning a cutting board: Use regular table salt, and a *small* amount of water. Wood cutting boards won't come unglued and salt scrubs and disinfects.  Jane...

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Remove odor from hands: After handling fish, garlic or onion use toothpaste (any brand will do) to wash your hands. Whatever the ingredient is in toothpaste, it takes the smell from your hands. (It takes the oils from the fish etc. from your skin).   Jane...

firefite.gif (4014 bytes)

Don't forget to let the firefighters know that you have pets! You can purchase stickers to put on your doors or windows to let them know you have pets in the house that are an important part of your family. It is also important to put stickers on the windows of your children's room(s). Some fire stations sell these stickers to raise funds, check with your local fire station... Aimee...

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)When starting out, don't worry about not having enough money. Limited funds are a blessing, not a curse. Nothing encourages creative thinking in quite the same way...  George...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)I contacted a dog behaviorist a few months ago and one of the things she recommend was to feed Bullies more starch, like rice and pasta. Also to make sure to feed them 2 times a day. We are doing the 2 times a day and the aggression has slowed down. Now I have to start cooking pasta for the girls.   I cooked so much when we had 7 2 legged kids home, I do as little of it a possible. She also suggested B6...    Sharon...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)When you arrive at your job in the morning, let the first thing you say brighten everyone's day...  Kevin...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Ticks... If you do happen to find a tick on your dog or cat, with an eye dropper, just drop a few drops of rubbing alcohol directly on the tick and they will let go and FAST! Even if they have started to attach themselves. This has worked for us for years without failure.  Sheila...
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Martha Stuart says to give your bulldogs two tablespoons of tomato juice over their food, twice a day and this will stop their urine killing the grass wherever they go to do their business. Breeder friend told me she did this with her feedings all last summer and it works. No more yellow grass at her house. And she says the bulldogs love the tomato juice over their food. (well actually Martha said to do this for all breeds).  Carolyn
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)I put a pair of santi-panties on the girls in heat with some Mentholatum on them and the boys think they have gone out of season...what the nose knows... Marsha
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)Stop male dogs from leg lifting in the house. It is called a belly band. Take an elastic bandage like you use for sprains. Cut it to fit around the males private parts and over his back. Close with Velcro, put a pad where the private parts are and you have a belly band. Only remove it when they are outside. Male dogs don't like to be wet in that are, hence, lifting the leg. They find that if they are inside they get wet when they mark and they generally stop after the first week. It is also a great potty training aid and will train them also in about a week, while saving that furniture... Marsha
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)If you are planning on taking a day trip, beach trip, any type of trip, the night before
put some water bottles in the freezer. The following day, as they melt you will have fresh COLD water all day long. We started doing this while hiking, but then realized that it's great to have on hand for our bullies when we all go somewhere together, especially car trips. (Don't worry, we have NEVER taken our bullies hiking.)

ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes)With advice from my vet, I ordered a bottle of zinc oxide powder from my pharmacist.  I use this in Icee's face wrinkles and under her tail. It keeps the areas dry, and free from infection caused by the dampness...  Jane
ag_Rsmiley.gif (879 bytes) Here's a tip for cheap panties for the girl's. Use jockey shorts, front end (with all those seams) goes to bitch's below region, back legs through leg openings, make a vertical slit for tail closest to bottom stitching (so it doesn't rip), slap a panty shield on and the waist band is secured with a big diaper pin then roll waist band a couple of times towards tail for comfort. I discovered this when my dear mom mailed me a whole bag of my dad's old underwear for my kids!!!  Catherine

Deskunking Recipe: Bathe your pet with a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen  peroxide (from the drug store) plus 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) plus 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Follow the bath with a tap water rinse... This tip is from Ruth...
Found that good ol' Massengil (douche) works on skunk odors. :) The main ingredient in it is white vinegar which I've also used in lieu of Massengil or tomato juice (cheaper too and easier to keep a whole gallon on hand :).  It is clean and tends not to cause staining on white fur like the tomato juice does. Was told by my vet to use anything that has the  acid in it like white vinegar or tomato juice.  This tip is from Lorraine...
Real vanilla extract (yes, the stuff you use in baking) to be most effective. Cuts the odor and makes them smell like Brute perfume for a while. They won't smell skunky when they get wet. Seems to help the whole odor problem go away more quickly. Don't use imitation vanilla.  This tip is from Cel
Believe it or not, "Bounce" dryer sheets work great! Just rub them onto your stinker- and no embarrassing visits to the drugstore!! This tip is from Elisa
Here's a link to a cool De-Skunk Formula from the Siskiyou Humane Society.

Diet Help for Bulldog Behavior / A special post from Sharon

  1. Adult dogs should be getting at least 2 meals a day. (forever) "Hunger tension" causes problems.
  2. The protein content should not be above 21%. House dogs don't need hi-pro food.
  3. High carbohydrate diets help to calm dogs. There are two ways to do this. In this area we have a dog food called Thompson's pasta. You can mix half of this to their other food. Also, you can cook macaroni and use for one meal. Cook large batches & freeze individual portions.
  4. Behaviorists have found that Vitamin. B6 also calms dogs. You would need this vitamin by itself, not the multiple vitamin. Give about 600 to 700 mg. a day. B is non-toxic and is safe. Get your Veterinarian's approval. You won't see results right away, but it does help in time.
  5. There are anti-anxiety medications which are used short term for serious aggression problems.

redapple.gif (3031 bytes)The Wonders of Red Apple Cider Vinegar  by Carolyn Waller

Equal parts water and apple cider vinegar for cleaning. For medicating such as hot spots, use full strength. Middle ear infection, a couple of drops full strength. For a bath rinse to treat skin and really get a good rinse of the soap off the coat, use about a quart to half gallon of red vinegar in three inches or so of bathtub water.

Important reminder: Pure, red apple cider vinegar is the only vinegar to use. It is made from apples. White vinegar can be made from lots of by-products such as wood pulp and I would not recommend it for use for anything. "An apple a day (one tablespoon of red vinegar) keeps the doctor away," and saves you so much $$$$.
