If the breed name contains any
prefix other than "French", it is
NOT A REAL BULLDOG !!!

The Bulldog (often called the English or more accurately the British Bulldog) has a gentle, patient temperament and is very intelligent, which makes them a wonderful choice for families with smaller children. However, it takes a special home to accommodate the Bulldog, as they are a rather high maintenance and expensive dog to properly care for. Anyone thinking about getting a Bulldog, must do their homework first, learning all they can about their special needs.

The other only 'true' Bulldog.  The French Bulldog with their 'bat' ears, has the appearance of an active, intelligent, muscular dog of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built, and of medium or small structure. Expression alert, curious, and interested.  Well behaved, adaptable, and comfortable companions with an affectionate nature and even disposition; generally active, alert, and playful, but not unduly boisterous.  The French Bulldog is happy in any loving environment. They are house dogs whose niche in life is to be an adored pet.  While principally bred to be companions, the French Bulldog is remarkably intelligent and serves as a good watchdog.

The Boxer is an alert, self-assured, and fearless dog.  The Boxer is a playful and fun-loving dog who is often called the "Peter Pan" of the dog world as they seem to maintain that youthful exuberance.

The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed's natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has great affection for people as well as gentle, affectionate, trustworthy, and loyal. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier requires a rigorous exercise regime to maintain his muscle tone. He will live happily in the city or the country as long as he is given a good physical workout.

The Bull Terrier must be strongly built, muscular, symmetrical and active, with a keen determined and intelligent expression, full of fire but of sweet disposition and amenable to discipline.  Bull Terriers are playful, fun-loving, sensitive, and affectionate dogs who make wonderful pets and companions, despite their tough appearance. The Bull Terrier is happiest when they are with the people they love. The closer the better. They are miserable and unhappy if shut away in a basement or kept outside away from human companionship.

The Bullmastiff is a very large, symmetrical animal, showing great strength, endurance, and alertness; powerfully built but active. The foundation breeding was 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. The breed was developed in England by gamekeepers for protection against poachers.   Maintaining such traits as alertness, wariness of strangers, strength, and agility, the Bullmastiff needs a firm loving home and is not a dog for the fragile or timid.

The Mastiff needs lots of exercise and should be kept in firm shape. But you should be careful not to over exercise, especially in his first year.   The Mastiff, even with its immense size, is a sensitive, tender, laid back companion.

I have heard many people say that they treat their dogs like people.  As I look at society as a whole and hear on the news or see at dog shows, how people treat each other, all I can say here is... please, NEVER treat your dog like a person!  They deserve better than that!

I receive an average of 50 to 60 letters or more each day, and so far I've been able to answer most of them, but it's getting harder. After all, as a Bulldog, and I need my 15 hours/day beauty rest! If you have a Bulldog care question, please take a look at the Cyber-Bulldog Coalition pages. . But never refrain from saying hi!
